Woke Snow White Abandons the Fairy Tale's Christian Roots

Dr. Kody W. Cooper

The original story of Snow White (and in some respects, the 1937 animated classic) was quickened by deeply biblical and Christian themes and imagery—even subtly evoking specifically Catholic themes. Chappell Roan, Parenthood, and Primordial Amnesia

Rachel Bulman

Chappell Roan isn't wrong, but she isn't right either. Parenting is all together heavenly and all together hellish at times too: both/and. When I listened to the entire recent podcast episode, I heard two people wrestling with identity, love, and who God is and whom he created them to be. A reality without God? That truly is hell.

Fr. Damian Ference

Some people have been surprised to learn Flannery O'Connor was a painter, but she believed in artistic cross-training. Cooper Flagg's Beauty in the Madness

Michael Adams

Talks of freshman phenom Cooper Flagg's generational talent began in high school and have continued throughout his first year at Duke. Analysts and commentators never run out of things to praise him for, and they all coalesce around the beauty of his game. What is it that makes his game so beautiful, and why are we so captivated by it?

Pious Bible Errors

Dr. Samuel J. Klumpenhouwer

Bible "errors" arise from various sources: faulty translations, scribal errors, variant manuscript traditions, and so forth. There is an inherent tension in Christianity between the desire for rigorous precision in preserving the biblical text and a missionary zeal that encourages the text to be copied and translated widely.

Noble Lies and Cultural Christianity

Patrick Gray

Finding Family and Faith in 'Paddington in Peru'
Dr. LuElla D'Amico

How often do we see a film open with such unabashedly joyful religious imagery—centered on women religious no less? Faith is embedded naturally within the culture of the story without being heavy-handed: It is exactly how the good news ought to be shared with children.

The Spiritual Problem and Opportunity of Boredom

Jeff Morgan

Without some kind of diversion to pass the time, boredom might take hold. It might direct us to pay more serious attention to ourselves. If we let the buzz of distractions fade and if we're willing to sustain the silence, we can find God in the stillness. But those are big "ifs."

The Embryo Wars: You Can't One-Up Mother Nature

Mark Bradford

Humanity has a long history of making a mess of things when it tries to one-up Mother Nature, which is, of course, God. Manipulating the natural environment is one thing—manipulating human life is on quite another level of horror. The embryo wars are just one manifestation of our culture's violation of human dignity.

Dr. Richard Clements

After winning the gold medal, Eric Liddell chose to forego all his new opportunities in order to become a missionary in China. He knew what lies at the heart of the Christian life and, indeed, at the heart of the divine life itself: self-surrendering, self-giving love.

Myths about Naturalism, Science, and Religion

Dr. Christopher Kaczor

We may be tempted to believe the myths of naturalism and modernity about the origins of science and its incompatibility with religious belief. But however comforting to our complacency and however appealing to our supposed intellectual superiority, myths are myths.

Biblical Stories Get a Fairy-Tale Retelling

Haley Stewart

"The tone of fairy stories is at once otherworldly and enchanting, familiar and comfortable. They draw you in, allowing for magic and mystery, without needing to explain too much of what's happening. The Bible deserves a stage that allows for its full potency, and I felt fairy tales could accomplish that."

The 4 Basics of Evangelization

Fr. Billy Swan

There are basics to which we need to regularly return if we are serious about being missionary disciples of Christ and being effective instruments of others coming to faith in him. The more these four aspects are effective and actively work together, the more the Church can carry out her mandate to "go make disciples of all nations."
