What are you doing to evangelize?
Dear Friend,
Our story started with a spark. A desire to fulfill Christ's great call: evangelization. We'd like to say we had a long-term plan since Word on Fire's conception, but we'd be lying. You see, our story is one of perseverance, exploration, and hope planted so deeply that it has touched the corners of the earth. But it all started as a small mustard seed . . . Word on Fire began in 2000 when then-Father Robert Barron was assigned by his mentor and predecessor Cardinal Francis George of Chicago to "evangelize the culture." Cardinal George had been given the task directly from his hero John Paul II.
To this day, Bishop Barron sees this as greatly significant―that his mentor, Cardinal George, heard directly from his mentor, Pope John Paul II, about the need to evangelize the culture. And so Bishop Barron has always taken that to be a prophetic call that we've all tried to follow at Word on Fire. Bishop Barron started proclaiming Christ in the culture by airing his homilies on WGN Radio, which is the biggest station in Chicago. It was a great start, but he was only reaching Chicagoans who were awake at 5:15 a.m. on Sundays and listening to the radio! But since the homilies were pre-recorded, Bishop Barron started housing them all on a website after his friend encouraged him to do so. From there, Word on Fire grew, because people could access the homilies anytime, anywhere. It was a simple but powerful idea: spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through multiple media platforms, engaging people with the truth, beauty, and goodness of Catholicism. | | Today, Word on Fire reaches millions every month by effectively and innovatively sharing the Gospel via podcasts, videos, books, Scripture studies, and Gospel meditations. Word on Fire sets out into the deep to reveal what it means to truly encounter Christ; to broadcast a faith that is "ever ancient, ever new"; to proclaim the universality of Catholicism beyond the borders of country or background. Our story is proof that all it takes is one spark to set the world ablaze.
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we call upon supporters like you to help us realize Bishop Barron's dreams of growing this vital ministry—with a new Word on Fire order of priests, an increased focus on evangelizing through film, and exciting new publishing projects.
