The Great Courses Journeys
| | Never stop learning. | | | | |
Dear Lifelong Learner, How did a local political dispute in the Balkans become a global catastrophe? Why did 10 million people die in a war locked into static trenches? How did America change in its emergence onto the global stage? The First World War continues to shape our world in profound ways. It laid the foundations for the 20th century and well beyond, creating that tensions that still divide Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to accompany a group of inquiring individuals on "Hallowed Ground," a tour of essential World War I sites in northern France and Belgium, exploring the war itself as well as how it is remembered and commemorated. Our travel will take us to the iconic battlefields of the war in Europe—Ypres, the Somme, Verdun—as well as the sites where American doughboys fought and established America's place in the world—Belleau Wood and the Meuse-Argonne. During our Great Courses journey, we'll enjoy the beauty and culture of France, in stark contrast with the horrors of the history we study. We'll also explore the rich history of the region well beyond World War I, spending time in Paris and Sedan. My previous exploration with the Great Courses was a profoundly moving experience, and I love sharing history with enthusiastic partners. I hope you can join me.
