My thoughts on democracy…

The newest issue of Evangelization & Culture focuses on a timely theme in today's contentious political landscape: democracy. 


American democracy is predicated on the belief that we are created by God and thus have inalienable rights that are neither granted nor rescinded by any human institution. As Thomas Jefferson writes in the Declaration of Independence, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."


Take out of consideration the Creator, who made every person in love and destined each for eternal life, and these inalienable rights promptly disappear—and individuals become, in very short order, the objects of political manipulation and domination.


I invite you to reflect on the Christian origins of modern democracy in this issue of Evangelization & Culture, exhibiting reflections on texts such as Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and Augustine's City of God.


Also featured in this journal is an excerpt from my recent conversation with Dr. Tod Worner where we discuss how the structure of American democracy reflects the Founders' understanding of human nature.
