A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Fighting Back Against the Trump Administration’s Chaos

What’s happening: Since Donald Trump took office just over 70 days ago, he has treated the American people to a dangerous parade of incompetencies that put our national security and communities at risk. From enacting across-the-board tariffs, to terminating key national security officials at the whim of a known conspiracy theorist, to wreaking havoc on the U.S. Forest Service, the Trump administration is harming Americans in every corner of our country.

Here’s how I fought back this week:

Protecting Medicaid: When President Trump and Republicans threaten Medicaid, they are threatening the health care of 80 million Americans – including children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities across Colorado. These policies are bad for our health care system and bad for patients, especially those in rural communities who already face numerous barriers to access care. This week, I went to the Senate floor to push back on these harmful proposals.

Pushing back on tariffs: President Trump’s across-the-board tariffs are already sowing chaos and uncertainty – and working Americans are paying the price. This week, the stock market saw its biggest plunge since 2020, and economists know that these tariffs will likely cost American families thousands each year. I’m using every tool at my disposal to fight back, including joining my colleagues to introduce a bipartisan bill reasserting Congress’ key role in setting and approving U.S. trade policy.

Fighting for a fair economy: Republicans’ tax bill gives tax breaks to Trump’s friends at Mar-a-Lago while hardworking families and future generations foot the bill. If we were serious about investing in our children, tackling our debt and deficit, and reducing skyrocketing wealth inequality, this bill would look very different. I spoke on the Senate floor urging my colleagues to vote against this disastrous legislation.

2. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • April is the Month of the Military Child, an opportunity to highlight the important role and unique experiences of the nearly 2 million military children across the country, including over 46,000 here in Colorado. This month and always, I’m grateful for the commitment and sacrifices of all military families.
  • This week marks the 57th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now more than ever, we must continue Dr. King’s lifelong fight for equality and fairness.
  • Reminder: the deadline for filing your federal income tax return is April 15 for most filers. You can get free, in-person help at your local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center – find an office near you here.
