Dear Neighbor, Last week, I was proud to have the opportunity to host two events that honored our fellow Coloradans' deep patriotism and commitment to service. To start, I had the privilege of presenting Carl Smith – Fort Collins native, Vietnam Veteran and community health leader – with a Purple Heart Medal. The Purple Heart Medal is a military decoration awarded on behalf of the President of the United States to those wounded or killed in action. Carl suffered significant wounds during his service, and it was humbling to have the opportunity to visit with him and express our deepest gratitude for his sacrifice and bravery. Read more about the pinning ceremony HERE. Later that same day, I made my way down to Superior for a burial replacement flag ceremony. Some of you may know the story of the American flag that was flown above Gladys Forshee's house during the Marshall Fire. A flag that remained untouched and unharmed by the flames throughout the course of that tragic disaster, which became a symbol of resilience and hope for those of our neighbors impacted. But what you may not have known is that the Marshall Fire destroyed Gladys' late husband's burial flag that was inside her home. I was honored to present her with a burial replacement flag and to join her in commemoration of her late husband and American veteran, Larry. Learn more about this event HERE.

Pictured (Right): Congressman Joe Neguse shakes Carl Smith's hand after pinning the Purple Heart Medal. | Earlier this month, as House Assistant Minority Leader, I was joined by leaders on the House Veterans' Affairs Committee for a press conference highlighting the importance of continuing the fight to improve access to health care and benefits for veterans and their survivors.
One of the main topics of discussion: The monumental progress made by the Honoring our PACT Act. Nearly two years ago, I was proud to vote for and help successfully enact this historic legislation that cuts through red tape for the brave Americans that were exposed to toxins and developed certain illnesses during their time in service.
The PACT Act was, and continues to be, the largest expansion of veterans benefits in a generation. In Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, we are proud to have nearly 28,561 veterans, and 1,578 folks have already filed PACT Act claims through the Veterans Affairs. | Pictured (Above): Assistant Leader Joe Neguse hosts press conference with House Veterans' Affairs Committee leaders. | If you are a veteran or survivor of a veteran of the Vietnam, Gulf War, and post-9/11 eras who were exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances, I encourage you to learn more about benefits that you may be entitled to. Our office has helped countless folks with Veterans Affairs casework, so please do not hesitate to reach out for any assistance. | It was great to have hosted a wide range of constituent events, where I had the chance to hear directly from folks across Colorado's 2nd. Check out some of my recent stops and keep an eye out for our future visits to towns near you! | Always appreciate the opportunity to visit with the hard-working local leaders and public servants in Larimer County, including the county's commissioners and the sheriff's office. Grateful to partner with them as we work together to deliver for the people of Larimer County. | | Grateful to everyone who stopped by our "Government at your Grocery" table in Fort Collins. | | Excited to have stopped by the Food Bank for Larimer County! Earlier this year, our office secured a significant federal investment to help ensure this organization can provide food assistance for households in Fort Collins and beyond. | | Always enjoy visiting with constituents at the Louisville Street Faire — many thanks to all who came by our booth! | | Recently, our team attended an event to honor the late Lucky McGinty, a World War II veteran. We were able to provide his family with an American flag flown over the United States Capitol and a Congressional Recognition Certificate to honor his service to our country. | Should you need any assistance from our office, please do not hesitate to reach out. Please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay hopeful! Sincerely, | | | | Joe Neguse Member of Congress | | | |
