Have you ever dreamed of traveling enchanted lands, exploring castles rich with legendary history, or stepping foot into a witch's cottage? Have you ever longed for the worlds of fantasy novels to seep into the real world, for the everyday to feel just slightly more… magical?
While we can't quite take you into the pages of your favorite books, we can get you pretty close with our Enchanted England journey. This extraordinary quest will take you through both the city streets of London and Oxford and the countryside and gardens of Dartmoor, Cornwall, Hampshire, and more. Magic is in the very soil of England, from Green Man folklore, to Arthurian legends, to J.R.R. Tolkien's world of Lord of the Rings. It sparkles around you in its strange monuments, haunted seasides, and fairy-tale forests. We feel it every time we're there, and we can't wait to share it with you.
During our Great Courses experience, we'll tour some of the most enchanted places in England. The mysterious Stonehenge, Tintagel Castle (the supposed birthplace of King Arthur), and the gorgeous Bodleian Library are just the tip of the iceberg. We'll also undertake a few more unexpected adventures, such as a visit to a real occult shop (one of the most famous in the world!), an afternoon tea in the shadow of Shakespeare's Globe, and a chance to discuss mythic literature with one of its champions, Terri Windling, on the Dartmoor moors.
As folklorists, we know that the stories we tell are a deep and powerful magic. Every detail of this trip was chosen with a nod to wonder and delight, and we hope you join us in making it a story to remember.
